UNDP Provides New Equipment to the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission

Continuing its support to the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC), UNDP handed over 11 Prado vehicles, 100 desktop computers, 125 notebook computers, 86 laser jet printers and 8 color printers.

The equipment was received by Senator Patrick Chinamasa, Minister of Justice and Legal Affairs, on behalf of ZEC. Present during the ceremony at the ZEC Head Office in Zimbabwe were representatives from the European Union, Denmark, Sweden, and Canada who are also partners to the ZEC. Also attending the event were seven ZEC commissioners.

In her remarks, UNDP Country Director Ms. Christine Umutoni reaffirmed UNDP’s commitment to supporting institutions such as ZEC, saying that the presentation of the equipment is another step towards facilitating capacity building within Zimbabwe.

Joyce Kazembe, chairwoman of ZEC highlighted the positive impact this donation will have on the operations of the ZEC and in enhancing the Commission’s role and mandate. Giving the vote of thanks, commissioner Bessie Fadzai Nhandara noted the benefits of the partnership with UNDP friendship, as well as the added strength that comes through working together on common goals.

Meanwhile, Senator Patrick Chinamasa performed the official inspection the items after performing the ceremonial ribbon-cutting.

Since 2010, UNDP has been assisting the ZEC as part of a partnership formed under UNDP’s support for capacity development focused on strengthening the ZEC to fulfill its mandate as the country’s electoral management body.
