Ms. C. Umutoni (UNDP Country Director) and Mr. A. Sithole (Member of Parliament)First Official Commissioning Ceremony by the UNDP Country Director in Masvingo Province

8 October 2009

On the 8th October 2009, Mrs Christine Umutoni, UNDP Country Director, commissioned the ‘Twananani Community Food Security Garden and Water Development’ micro-project in the Masvingo province (Chiredzi District) supported by the French / UNDP community oriented programme ‘Assistance to Underprivileged Rural Populations Project’ (AURP).

The grant provided to the Twananani community through the beneficiary representative organization, Lowveld Environment Awareness Programme (LEAP), has enabled the development of a two-hectare irrigated garden and the development of a source of drinking water for both people and their animals for food security purposes.

Speaking at the commissioning ceremony of the project, Mrs Umutoni confirmed the commitment of UNDP to contribute to sustainable alleviation of poverty and welcomed the opportunity to address the importance of food security and water which are at the heart of the Millennium Development Goals. She also outlined the level of willingness, mobilisation and transparent commitment of the community in trying to address the vicious circle of poverty and encouraged the community to save the income made from the sale of their vegetables for improving their garden and/or using it for the benefit of their families (i.e education).

Mr Abraham Sithole, Member of the Parliament of the Chiredzi Constituency East as well as Chairperson of LEAP acknowledged the support given by UNDP and the French Government in helping his District to fight poverty, “We appreciate your assistance and you have defeated all the odds. The project was funded during difficult time and no one wanted to provide fund but you did, God Bless you’”.

He also outlined the importance of other communities to come to learn from this project.

The implementation of the project, has given the community a new lease of life by becoming a source of livelihood for the Twananani community and the surrounding villages through the supplementing of household income and the provision of vegetables and crops that are a great nutritional value to the communities.

Aiming at contributing to alleviate rural poverty in the southern regions of Zimbabwe through the funding of community-based micro-projects, the French funded ‘Assistance to Underprivileged Rural Populations’ project was launched in 2001, in partnership with the UNDP. Since its launch, 36 micro-projects have been implemented in Masvingo, Matabeleland South and Manicaland provinces benefiting more than 30 000 rural people.
