Brown Bag Event: The Impact of the Global Economic and Financial Crisis on Zimbabwe

20 October 2009

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Country Office in Zimbabwe held a brownbag event to discuss the impact of the Global Economic and Financial Crisis on Zimbabwe. The event was chaired by Mrs. Christine Umutoni, UNDP Country Director, and facilitated by Mr. James Wakiaga, UNDP Economic Advisor. The panellists comprised of Dr. Mungai N. Lenneiye, World Bank Country Manager, Mr. Charles Mujajati, Director, Ministry of Economic Planning and Investment Promotion and Dr. Godfrey Kanyenze, a leading Zimbabwean Economist and Director of Labour and Economic Development Research Institute of Zimbabwe (LEDRIZ). The discussions were led by Dr. George Kararach of African Capacity Building Foundation (ACBF) and Mr. Udo Etukudo, Economic consultant with UNDP CO.

On the 8th October 2009, Mrs Christine Umutoni, UNDP Country Director, commissioned the ‘Twananani Community Food Security Garden and Water Development’ micro-project in the Masvingo province (Chiredzi District) supported by the French / UNDP community oriented programme ‘Assistance to Underprivileged Rural Populations Project’ (AURP).

UNDP Zimbabwe Country Office Signs the Global Fund Round 5 Grants

August 2009

The Global Fund to fight HIV/AIDS, Malaria and Tuberculosis (GFATM) Round 5 grants were signed between the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Zimbabwe and the Global Fund on the 7 August 2009. The signing ceremony was witnessed by the Chairman of the Country Coordinating Mechanism (CCM) - Dr Henry Madzorera and a representative of Civil Society Organisations (CSO) on the CCM - Ms Primrose Matambanadzo. To demonstrate the Government’s commitment and support for the programme, the ceremony was attended by Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai and several senior government officials. Under the GFATM Round 5 Zimbabwe will receive a total of US$37.9million to fight the 3 epidemics and to revive the public health sector in Zimbabwe. US$ 5.69 million will go towards Tuberculosis (TB), US$ 11.78 million towards Malaria and US$20.40 million to HIV and AIDS.

9- 10 August 2009: UNDP supports Ministry of Regional Integration and International Cooperation to define role, priorities and strategy 

The staff of the newly created Ministry of Regional Integration and International Cooperation held a two-day staff retreat from 9-10th August 2009 in Nyanga. The objective of the retreat was to discuss the role, priorities and strategic objectives of the Ministry in the context of Africa’s regional integration process and globalisation trends. The retreat was officially opened by Hon. Priscilla Misihairambwi-Mushonga, Minister for Regional Integration and International Cooperation and addressed by UNDP Resident Representative, Dr. Agostinho Zacarias and World Bank Ag. Country Manager, N. Mungai Lenneiye. It was facilitated by the staff of the UNDP Country Office in Harare.
